Chapter 1

Elena Gilbert came to the graveyard to write to dead people. Four months after the car crash that killed her parents, she still sat on the same cracked stone path every morning, a leather journal open on her knees. She wanted her old life back. She wanted to laugh again, to fall for the boy who kept finding her here. Instead she wrote three words and stopped. Her pen shook. "Dear Mom and Dad," she read aloud. The rest wouldn't come. It never came. The crooked headstones watched her fail. A shadow fell across the page. She knew before she looked. He stood between two marble angels, hands in his coat pockets, waiting like he had every right to be in a cemetery at dawn. Stefan. He didn't smile the way other boys smiled at her. He looked at her like he already understood the weight she carried. "You come here every day," he said. His voice was quiet, careful. "You don't have to do it alone." Elena closed the journal. Her chest tightened. She wanted to reach for him. She wanted, more than anything, to let one person in. But grief made her cruel. "You don't know me," she said. "Stop pretending you do." Something flickered across his face. Hurt, maybe. He nodded once and stepped back. "Okay." He turned toward the iron gate. That was when she saw them. A small bundle of purple flowers rested near her mother's grave, tied with a green stem. Vervain. Someone had left it. The blossoms were fresh, still damp. Her mother used to grow these by the porch steps. She used to press them into Elena's palm and call them protection. Elena picked up the bundle. Her fingers steadied around the stems. The smell hit her, sharp and green, and suddenly she was eight years old again, safe on a summer afternoon. She started to cry. Not the frozen, silent way she'd cried for months. Real crying, the kind that finally moves. "Wait," she said. Stefan stopped at the gate. "I can't do this alone," Elena said. "I've been trying, and I can't." She held the flowers against her chest. "Don't go." He came back slowly. He sat on the path beside her, close but not touching. He didn't ask questions. He let her finish crying. When she opened the journal again, the words came. She wrote a full page. She wrote about the crash, and the silence in the house, and how tired she was of being strong. When she finished, she looked at him. "Who left these flowers?" Stefan looked at the vervain in her hands. His careful expression changed. He'd seen the plant before, and he knew what it meant. "I don't know," he said. But the pause before he spoke told her something. Someone was watching her. And Stefan knew more than he was saying.
