Chapter 1
Elena Whitmore had spent three days trying to make a stranger smile, and she had failed every time. She was the guardian of this grove, a woman in a white gown who healed the sick and blessed the lost. Mortals came to her weeping. They left grateful. But this one, a soldier named Marcus Reid, only stood among her trees and watched her with tired eyes. His leather armor was fine, cut like a young prince's. He spoke little. He never smiled. And Elena, who could soothe any grief, did not know what troubled him.
She decided he needed an angel. So she stood tall by the moonlit sanctuary and offered him healing.
"You carry a wound," she said. "Kneel, and I will take your pain."
Marcus stayed on his feet. "I'm not hurt."
"Then you are lost. Let me guide you home."
"I know the way home." He looked at the glowing towers in the trees. "I don't want it."
Elena's certainty cracked. She had healing, blessings, comfort. He wanted none of it. Every gift she offered slid off him like rain off stone.
She led him to the stone altar with its silver beam of light. Here mortals begged the gods for help. She thought he might kneel at last. Instead Marcus touched the worn carvings and frowned.
"People come here to ask for things," he said. "I've done enough asking. I came to the woods to stop."
Elena stopped playing the angel. She sat on the altar step, gown pooling around her, and looked at him like a woman, not a goddess.
"Then tell me what you want," she said. "I am tired of guessing."
Marcus likes Elena and for the first time he sat too, close to her, on the cold stone.
"I was a soldier," he said. "I followed orders. I did what I was told was right. Then I saw what those orders did to a village, and I stopped being sure of anything." He rubbed his hands together. "I don't want to be told what to do anymore. I want to figure out how to help the right way. That's why I stayed. You help people. I wanted to watch how."
Elena laughed, surprised. "I have been trying to save you all week. You only wanted to learn."
And there it was. Marcus's mouth curved. A real smile, small and warm, aimed at her. It stayed.
Elena felt it land like sunlight. She had won the thing she wanted. But the smile changed everything. Marcus was not a lost soul to bless and send away. He was a man asking to stay and learn her work.
"Teach me, then," he said. "Show me how you decide who deserves help."
Elena's chest tightened. She healed with power, not judgment. She had never asked who deserved it. Now a soldier sat in her grove, smiling, waiting for an answer she did not have.
