Chapter 4

The grove felt too open now. Elena stood by the stone altar and watched the trees. The wanderer was gone, but his warning stayed. Men waited on a road nearby. They knew the way in. Anyone could walk through the gaps between the trunks and reach her before she saw them. "They could come while I sleep," she said. "I wouldn't know until they stood on the altar." Marcus crossed the grove and stopped beside her. He wore his fitted leather, and he moved like a soldier reading ground. He had come to her weeks ago not for healing but to learn how she chose who to help. Now he studied the edges of her home the same careful way. "You have open ground on every side," he said. "No wall. No warning. A hired band could rush you in seconds." "Then I'll close it," Elena said. She pressed both palms to the earth at the grove's edge. Her power ran down into the roots. She had used it to build the tall living homes above her, their vines and yellow flowers climbing the trunks. Now she asked the ground for more. Green shoots pushed up between her fingers. The shoots thickened into a wall of woven wood. It rose past her waist, then her shoulders. Thorns curled along its top. She left one narrow gap, then bent the branches into a low arch above it. Anyone entering had to stoop and pass through a single point. Elena stepped back. Sweat ran down her neck. The wall ringed the whole grove now. The gap faced the open trees where the wanderer had come and gone. "Sound," Marcus said. "You need to hear them too." He knelt at the arch and gathered dry twigs and dead leaves. He spread them thick across the only path through the gap. "Step on this in the dark and it snaps. You'll wake." Elena added her own touch. She grew thin, brittle reeds along the inside of the wall, packed close. A hand pushing through would crack them like ice. They tested it together. Marcus walked the outer edge and tried three spots. The thorns turned him back each time. He came through the arch, and the twigs cracked loud under his boots. Elena heard it from the altar. "It works," she said. Marcus smiled at her, brief and real. "Now they can't take you by surprise." Elena rested her hand on the warm stone of the altar. For the first time since the wanderer left, her chest loosened. She had turned her open grove into something she could defend. Then she looked at the narrow arch. A wall kept strangers out. But the honest and the hurt came through that same gap. When the men arrived, they would find the way barred and the goddess awake. They would not simply leave. They would push. Elena had bought herself warning. She had not bought them off.
