Chapter 1

Elizabeth pressed her face against her bedroom window and stared at the house across the street. Mac lived there, with his sapphire eyes and perfect smile. She wanted him to love her more than anything in the world. Her heart beat faster every time she thought about becoming his girlfriend. She pulled out her Limited Edition Princess Diary and opened it with her thumbprint. Inside was her color-coded list of every girl who talked to him. Obstacle A through Z. She traced her finger down the names and frowned. All of them were nothing special, yet Mac smiled at them anyway. She needed to show him something bigger, something that would make him see only her. Tomorrow at school, everyone would know exactly how impressive Elizabeth Jadebird really was. She closed the diary and walked to her desk. Her father's credit card sat there, waiting. She called him and explained her idea. "I need a building, Daddy. A big one made of brick with arched windows everywhere." He asked no questions, just like always. By morning, the delivery trucks arrived at school. Workers unloaded thousands of bricks and began construction in the courtyard. The grand replica of San Dimas High School rose up, towering over everything. Students gathered and stared. Elizabeth smoothed her white dress and counted Mac's glances. One. Two. Three. He looked at the building, then at her. His mouth opened slightly. She smiled her sweetest smile and waited for him to finally understand that she was the only girl worth noticing. But Mac turned away and started talking to some girls near the water fountain. Elizabeth's hands clenched into fists. The building wasn't enough. She needed to do more, be more. At lunch, she grabbed the hexagonal black and white ball from the equipment shed. The Orb of the Blitz felt cold in her hands. She walked onto the field where Mac sat eating his sandwich. Other students watched as she began juggling the orb with her feet, knees, shoulders. She had practiced for hours last night until her legs ached. The orb spun and bounced exactly where she wanted it. Mac looked up and watched her. His eyes stayed on her for four seconds, then five, then six. Elizabeth's heart soared. This was it. This was the moment everything would change, and Mac would finally see that she was the most impressive girl he had ever known. The orb dropped to the ground and rolled away. Mac stood up and walked toward her. Elizabeth's breath caught in her throat. But he walked past her to pick up the ball. He handed it to another girl who thanked him with a giggle. Elizabeth pulled out her iPhone and opened Storycraft. Her fingers shook as she typed an announcement about her building achievement. She posted it and watched the screen. Likes came in from other students, but none from Mac. She slipped the phone into her pocket and stared at his back as he walked away. Tomorrow she would try again. She would keep trying until he understood that no other girl could match what Elizabeth Jadebird was willing to do for him.
