Chapter 1

Elon Mistweaver could feel every soul in the forest, and none of them were his. That was the curse of his gift. Since childhood, he had sensed the quiet hum of other hearts around him. He could tell joy from grief, kindness from cruelty, all without a word. But one day, he knew, a single soul would ring out like a struck bell. That soul would be his match. He had waited thirty years to feel it. This morning, he stood on the carved wooden balcony of his home. Living branches wove through its walls. Crystals glowed soft blue along the doorframe below. Birds nested in the eaves. It was a beautiful place to be lonely. "You're brooding again," came a dry voice behind him. Elon turned. His dragon had landed on the broad deck, black scales and green wings folded tight. The two had been bonded since Elon was a boy. The dragon tilted his horned head and studied him with one sharp yellow eye. "I'm not brooding," Elon said. He grinned, showing small fangs. "I'm thinking. It looks the same on a handsome face." "It looks the same on yours." The dragon huffed smoke. "You felt something. Don't lie to me. I've known you too long." Elon's grin faded. He pressed a hand to his chest. The dragon was right. For the first time in his life, his gift had stirred at dawn. A new soul had entered the forest. It did not hum like the others. It rang. "There," Elon whispered. He turned toward the treeline, past the glowing homes and the bonded dragons perched on their platforms. "Someone came in the night. I can feel them. Clear as a bell." The dragon's wings shifted. "The one you've waited for?" "I think so." Elon's hands shook. He gripped the railing to steady them. All his jokes left him. Thirty years of waiting, and now the waiting was over. "It's real. The resonance is real." "Then why do you look afraid?" Elon didn't answer at once. He had always believed that finding his soulmate would feel like arriving home. Instead it felt like standing at a cliff's edge. He knew the soul was out there. He did not know the face. He did not know if they would want him back. "Because I can sense them," he said. "But sensing isn't winning. A matched soul can still walk away." The dragon lowered a wing to the deck, an old invitation. "Then stop talking and go find them." Elon laughed, short and nervous. He climbed onto the dragon's back and gripped the horns. His heart beat against his ribs like something trying to escape. The bell was still ringing somewhere in the trees, waiting. "Fly," Elon said. "Before I lose my nerve." The dragon leapt from the deck. The glowing homes fell away below them. Somewhere ahead, a stranger's soul called to his, and Elon flew toward a face he had never seen.
