Chapter 2
Elowyn needed a room. Three outsiders could not gather in her family's cascade house without a servant noticing, and one whisper to the council meant death for all of them. She had six days left to finish the spell maps and nowhere safe to draw them. Her staff's crystal pulsed as she walked the white halls, catching her fear before she named it. She had to decide tonight.
Theron met her on the garden path at dusk. Tall, silver-haired, he tripped over his own robe and caught himself on a railing. He held out a small brass disk. "It hums when ears come near," he said, blushing. "I made it for you. For the maps." He did not notice how close she stood. She took the gift and felt the old warmth rise, then pushed it down. A gadget would not hide them. A place would.
That was when Aldric found them, ink smudged across his nose, satchel heavy with scrolls. He is the cartographer who tolerates nothing but certainty, and tonight his certainty saved her. "I have a room," he said. No greeting. He pulled Elowyn by the wrist, Theron following, down a stair she had never seen behind the house's lowest spire.
Aldric pressed his palm to a bare stone wall. A seam of silver light split the rock. "Blood-bound," he said. "Keyed to me. Four years I kept it empty." The wall swung inward. He pulled Elowyn through, then Theron, and sealed it. Lantern light flickered over a low vaulted chamber, dry and silent. The hum in Theron's brass disk fell quiet. No ears above. No eyes.
Elowyn turned slowly. The room was deep enough to hide three. The wards would stop a council scryer cold. Her shoulders dropped for the first time in a day. "This works," she said. "We can finish here." Theron was already unrolling parchment across a stone table, muttering about rune lines. The obstacle was solved. They had their safe place.
Then the stutter left Aldric's voice. He stepped close and cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing her skin. "I won't let anything touch you," he said, gaze locked on hers. Elowyn froze. Across the table, Theron looked up from his parchment. His hand stopped moving. He saw the touch, and the warmth drained from his face.
Elowyn stepped back from Aldric's hand. The room was safe now, but the three people inside it were not. She had her hidden workshop and six days to use it. She also had two men who had just learned, in one silent moment, what they each felt and what the other felt too. The maps needed all three of them calm and working together. That had just become the harder problem.
