Chapter 6

The council chamber sat beneath a white spired house she had passed a hundred times without knowing. Elowyn carried the rolled map and her one argument. Twelve elders waited in a half-circle. She had never spoken before them, and one of them wanted her dead. She did not know which. Misread the room, and she would not leave it. Her crystal warmed the moment she stepped onto the stone floor. It caught what she could not yet see. She felt grief first, old and buried, then a sharper thread beneath it. Fear. Someone in the circle feared her more than the others did. A grumpy elder leaned forward. His voice came clipped and exact. "State your claim. One sentence. No more." Elowyn met his stern eyes. "The ward protects by repeating a single pattern," she said. "That pattern breaks the same way every time, and I hold the key." The room shifted. Her crystal flared hot at her hip. The fear she had sensed snapped into a decision. An elder near the far end rose, hand lifting toward her. His mouth opened to call for her death. She had found him too late to argue. A figure moved between them before the words landed. He wore dark green leather, and his short blade was already half-drawn. His palms, when he raised them, showed scars across both. He had stepped into the strike meant for her, and he did not flinch. "Let her finish," he said, soft but flat. "You asked for one sentence. She gave it. Now hear the rest." The grumpy elder watched the standing one lower his hand. Then he turned back to Elowyn. "The key. Prove it exists." Elowyn unrolled the map on the floor. She did not point to ten marks. She pointed to one root symbol, copied across the parchment. "Here. And here. And here. The same flaw, ten times. Kill me, and you bury the knowledge. But the flaw stays. The next elf who finds it will not come to you first." Silence held. Her crystal cooled by a degree. The fear in the room thinned, outweighed now by something colder and more useful to her. Interest. The grumpy elder spoke last. "A conditional seat. You map the ward. You report to this council. You speak of us to no one." His tone turned final. "Refuse, and the earlier motion stands." "I accept," Elowyn said. She rolled the map and stood. She had not been deemed worthy. She had been deemed useful, which was thinner ground and easier to lose. The soft-spoken shadow who had blocked the strike fell into step behind her. He said nothing. But he did not leave her side, and she understood what that meant. The elder who wanted her dead was still in the room. Now he knew she lived by the council's leash, and so did she.
