Elwood's Arc

Elwood gripped his old broom tight in his trunk. The yellow caution tape across the trash pile fluttered, torn. Beyond it, deep in the part of the park he had sworn never to enter again, something moved. He was a janitor elephant, built to make this park shine like it once did. But shame had taught him to seal his failures behind tape and silence. A clatter rang out. Metal on metal. Elwood's gears whined as he stepped closer, dim power flickering behind his eyes. He pushed past the snapped tape. Dust rose around his feet. In the dark stood a small rusted figure, yellow eyes glowing, faded paint flaking from its joints. It held a bent bolt in one hand. It had been trying, badly, to fix something. It froze when it saw him. Elwood lifted the broom between them, not as a weapon, but like a shield against the years. The little animatronic tilted its head. It did not run. It set the bolt down at Elwood's feet, waiting. The sealed section was sealed no longer, and Elwood knew, with a cold certainty, that he could not turn back now.
