Chapter 1
Elyra Vael stood at the edge of the desert her people forbade, and she wanted, for once, to belong somewhere she chose. She was seven feet tall and pale as bone, with silver eyes that most of her kind found strange. All her life, the elders said the desert killed the curious. All her life, she had lived instead inside the rainbow cavern, where the walls shimmered red and gold and blue, and where she never once felt at home. She stepped past the boundary stone. The oldest law broke under her foot.
Wind pushed hot sand across the dunes. She walked until her legs ached. Then she saw it. A long metal shape lay half-buried in the sand, wider than her cavern's mouth. Its skin was scorched black. One end had split open. This was no rock and no ruin she knew. She pressed her palm to the hull. It was still warm.
Elyra found the crack in the metal and climbed inside. The air smelled burned. Broken panels blinked with dying light. On the floor, tangled in torn straps, lay a figure. It breathed. Its chest rose and fell in short, wet gasps. She knelt. The survivor's eyes opened, dark and afraid, and fixed on her face.
Elyra had never spoken to anyone outside her people. She had no words for this. The survivor lifted one shaking hand and pointed past her, to a shelf inside the wreck. A round crystal rested there, faceted and bright, a faint glow drifting inside it. She reached for it. The moment her fingers touched the sphere, images flooded her mind. A green world. Faces like the survivor's. A ship falling. The crystal held the survivor's whole life, and now it poured that life into her.
She gasped and pulled her hand back. The survivor's breathing slowed. Its eyes stayed open, but the light behind them thinned. It was dying, and it knew. With its last strength, it closed her fingers around the sphere and pressed her hand to its own chest. The meaning was plain. Keep it. Carry it. Remember.
Then the chest stopped moving. The survivor was gone.
Elyra sat in the ruined ship, the sphere warm in her palm, and understood two things at once. She had broken her world's oldest law, and she could not undo it. And she now held the memory of a creature that had crossed the dark to reach this place. She did not belong to her people. She was not sure she ever had. But this stranger had chosen her, in its last breath, to carry what it left behind.
Outside, the wind had turned. Elyra climbed from the wreck and saw torches moving across the dunes. Her people had followed her tracks past the boundary stone. They were coming to drag her back, and she still held the forbidden crystal in her hand.
