Chapter 1

Ember Kindleheart held the glowing steel with bare, burning hands, and the metal buckled again. The blade curled like a wilting leaf. Ember dropped it, hissing. Five ruined swords lay scattered at their feet. Ember was made of living flame, and their whole body ran hotter than any furnace. But they wanted to forge one perfect blade, a legendary sword that only a true hero could wield. Their own fire was the problem. It burned too hot and too wild, with no walls to hold it steady. Ember lived at the top of a tall stone tower crowned by a great bonfire. The heat suited them. But a bonfire was not a forge. A forge needed control. Ember pressed a fresh bar of steel between their palms and squeezed. The metal glowed white, softened, then slumped sideways. Ruined. Again. Ember climbed down and stepped outside to think. Near the tower stood a tall yellow tree. Small glowing souls drifted from its branches like slow, floating sparks. Ember had passed the tree a hundred times. Now they stopped and watched. The drifting souls did not scatter in the wind. They held their shape. Each wisp moved slow and even, never flaring, never dying. Ember stretched out one flaming hand toward the nearest soul. It curled around their fingers and did not burn away. Their own fire calmed where the two touched. The wild flicker went steady. Ember understood. The tree gave off a cool, patient glow that tamed heat instead of feeding it. If they could not build walls to hold their fire, they could borrow the tree's calm to hold it instead. Ember gathered fallen branches from the base of the tree. The wood still carried faint drifting souls in its grain. Ember stacked the branches into a ring and set a flat stone in the center for an anvil. Then they knelt inside the ring and let their fire rise. This time the branches answered. The soul-light wove through Ember's flames and pulled them tight. The wild heat pressed down into a narrow, steady point. Ember laid a new steel bar on the stone and struck it with a heavy rock. The metal held its shape. It did not curl. It did not slump. Ember worked through the night. Strike by strike, the bar flattened and lengthened into the clean spine of a blade. The soul-ring held the heat exactly where Ember aimed it. By dawn a rough sword lay on the stone, straight and whole, still glowing. Ember lifted it. It did not warp. For the first time, the metal obeyed. Then the light in the ring guttered. The branches crumbled to gray ash. The drifting souls faded and were gone. Ember stared at the single finished blade in their hands. The tree had shed only so many souls, and Ember had spent them all on one sword. To forge a legendary blade, they would need far more. And now the ground held only ash.
