Embera pressed her thumb against the wooden counter and watched the grain darken where her skin touched it. Too much heat. She pulled back and flexed her fingers, forcing the warmth down into her chest where it belonged. The candle shop smelled like beeswax and pine, familiar and safe — exactly what she needed people to believe about her. Outside, snow fell in thick silence over Hiverna's narrow streets. Inside, she was building something the dragon would never see coming: a network of survivors who could run together when the fire found them again. The bracelet arrived with the morning deliveries, left on her doorstep in a plain wooden box. It shifted colors as she lifted it — pink to gold to silver — visible only to her eyes. She recognized the material immediately: chameleon glass, forged in Solaris heat. The moment her fingers touched it, warmth bloomed against her palm. A message. She held it closer and let her own heat answer. Symbols appeared in the glass, glowing orange like embers: three marks she'd learned as a child, a code only survivors would know. The message was simple. Help. But when she checked the glass for a signature, for any trace of who sent it, she found nothing. No heat pattern. No sender. Just the plea, hanging in the frozen air of Hiverna like smoke with no fire. Embera pulled a stack of jelly bracelets from beneath her counter — orange, purple, black, green. She'd been using them to mark safe houses, to pass coded routes between survivors who didn't yet know they were part of something larger. She slipped the chameleon bracelet onto her wrist beside them and felt its warmth pulse once, then go silent. Someone out there knew the old codes. Someone was asking for the network. But a message with no living source meant one of two things: either a survivor was already ash, or the dragon had learned their language. Either way, her network wasn't invisible anymore.
