Chapter 1

Xero sat on his throne of black ice and gold chains, watching the foreign envoy cross the long hall. He did not move. He never moved for anyone. The man knelt and placed a red crystal at his feet, its center burning like a trapped sun. "My queen rules two kingdoms," the envoy said. "She offers a third. Yours. She will give you the heirs you seek." Xero studied the stone. He studied the man's hands more. Outside the hall, a tall banner had been planted by the envoy's people — a carved likeness of Xero himself, cast in gold and rare stone, meant to flatter. He found the gesture loud. Flattery was always loud. He dismissed the envoy and walked alone into his private chamber. There he knelt, for the first time that day, and spoke a quiet prayer. Olryme arrived without sound. Their starlit robe stirred the still air. "You called." Xero asked for honesty. Olryme gave it. "The offer is real. The cost is also real. Three crowns on one head will split your empire before the child is weaned. Her nobles will not bend. Yours will not bend. Blood will answer the question you refuse to ask." A pause. "And she does not love you. That is not a flaw. It is the shape of the thing." In the corner where the lamplight failed, a second listener pressed close to the dark. Nyxi watched without breath. A queen at war with herself. A crystal full of fire. An emperor desperate enough to consider a stranger's womb. She did not smile. She rarely did. She simply began to plan how to enter the room where this would be decided. Xero rose. He thanked Olryme with a small nod, the closest thing he gave to warmth. "Then I will not choose one offer in the dark," he said. "I will make them all stand in the light." He summoned his steward before the hour ended and gave the order. A ball. The grandest his court had ever held. Every queen, every daughter of every bloodline worth naming. The foreign queen included. He would watch them when they thought he was not watching. He would choose there. The envoy was sent home with his answer: come, and bring her. The red crystal was placed beside the throne, neither accepted nor refused. In the dark corner, Nyxi withdrew, already moving. The decision was made. The room was set. And every dangerous thing in Olminix now had a date on which to arrive.
