Chapter 5

A month later, Erica left her forest. She rode out past the border guards in her teal dress, silver hair loose, flower crown on her head. The trees thinned. The land grew dry and open. By dusk she saw the cat clan camp: tents clustered around a central fire, warriors resting on woven mats. She was the outsider now. She had no place here, and she knew arriving unwelcome would mark her as prey. Zera met her at the camp's edge. She wore no court dress here, only travel leather. Her gold eyes swept Erica once, then the treeline behind her. "You brought no guards." "You told me your court isn't gentle," Erica said. "I came alone to show I'm not afraid." "You are afraid." Zera stepped closer, voice low. "Good. Keep it hidden." She glanced at the fire, where warriors watched over their meat. "They see a soft forest girl in a crown. That is a problem." Erica followed her look. The warriors had stopped eating. One flicked his tail. She felt the weight of every stare. "Then tell me how to fix it." "You cannot walk in as my bride," Zera said. "A bride handed to them is a gift. A gift can be refused. You must arrive as something they cannot refuse." She stopped, jaw tight. "Say it." "Enter as a ruler come to sign, not a woman come to wed. Meet my father tonight, before they eat. Stand while he sits. Speak first." Zera's ears flattened. "If you wait to be presented, you are theirs. If you present yourself, you set the terms." Erica's stomach turned. Custom said a ruler who traveled to another's ground was weak. She had already broken that by coming. She could not undo it. She could only outrun it. Prince Valor came around the fire then, orange fur bright in the flame light. He gave Erica a lazy nod, as if her rejection had cost him nothing. "You came," he said. "Braver than my sister thought." "Where is your father?" Erica asked. Valor tilted his head toward the largest tent. "Eating soon. He hates being interrupted." A pause. "He respects it more." Erica walked past both of them. She did not wait for Zera to lead. She crossed the camp between the staring warriors, chin up, crown catching the firelight, and pushed open the flap of the ruler's tent while the meal still cooked. The old cat clan king looked up from his mat. She stayed standing. "I am Erica Moonwhisper," she said. "I did not come to be given. I came to end your war and marry your blood. Sign, and the forest and the camp both keep their dead in the ground." The tent went silent. Behind her, Zera stopped in the doorway. The king set down his cup. He did not smile. But he waved her to the mat across from him. She had a seat now. She was no longer standing outside the fire. She had bought her place, and she had spent her only forest to do it.
