Chapter 2

The woman in the grave spoke, and her words were not for Ethan. They were a warning. He had killed her. Now that truth sat in his chest like a stone. But the memory did not free him. He still could not cross. The yard held him the way it always had. He stumbled back toward the reeds, where the black water waited, and where the ghost who had set him on this path still watched. "You said the name would open the door," Ethan said. "I said it. I remember what I did. So why am I still here?" Silas Murkwood rose from the muck. Only his top half surfaced, grey mist and bare ribs, worms twisting from his eye sockets. He grinned, too wide, the way he always did. "Because knowing is not the same as paying, dead man. A crossing is a door. A door has a price. You only found the lock." "Then tell me the price." Silas tilted his head. Water ran off his jaw. "Confession. Real confession. Not to me. Not to her bones. To the one you left behind. The living carry your guilt. Hand it back, or you drift here forever." He pointed a dripping finger past the house. Ethan followed the gesture. A figure stood near the boarded-up shape of his old childhood home, half-swallowed by weeds. A young man. Thin. Dark circles under his eyes. He held something small and white in one hand. A photograph. Ethan knew him before he saw his face. Sammy. His younger brother. Grown now, hollowed out by years of grief he had never earned. "Sammy," Ethan breathed. Sammy did not look up. He could not hear the dead. He pressed the photograph to his mouth and sat down in the dirt, shoulders shaking. A black raven dropped from the broken eaves and landed beside him. Ethan's old pet. It had waited here too. "He thinks you died a good man," Silas said behind him. "That is the weight. Lift it, and the door opens. But he will know what you were. Choose." Ethan drifted close. He knelt beside his brother in the weeds. Sammy could not see him. So Ethan did the only thing left. He spoke the truth out loud, into the cold air, where only the dead could carry it. "I killed her, Sammy. Here. In this yard. I am not what you've been grieving." The raven lifted its head. It looked straight at Ethan. Then it screamed, once, and the sound cut through the night like a knife through cloth. Sammy went still. His hand opened. The photograph fell. He stared at the grave, at the broken stone, as if something had whispered it into his ear. The cold around Ethan loosened. A crack of pale light split the air above the headstone. The crossing had opened at last. But Sammy was looking at the grave now with a new, terrible understanding. And the door, once open, would not wait.
