Chapter 21

Margaret knew her mother's face now, but not where she had gone. The compass pulled her forward, then bent the needle in a slow curve. They walked, and the gray folded back on itself. The same fog, the same empty stretch. Margaret stopped. "We've passed this spot," she said. "The needle wants her, but I don't know the road she took. It only circles." Ethan watched the needle swing and settle and swing again. A face in a locket was not enough. They needed to know where her mother had traveled. A light grew in the mist. Not the door's glow, but warm lamplight behind stone. A building rose from the fog, tall and square, with a clock above its doors. Gold letters named it an archive. "Records," Margaret said. "A place that keeps things." The doors stood open. They went in. Inside, an old man sorted papers at a long desk. He wore a faded uniform, a pin on his collar, round glasses low on his nose. He did not startle at two ghosts. He only looked up and smiled, as if he had waited a long while for visitors. "Harold Pemberton," he said, and tapped the pin. "Carried the mail in this town forty years. I knew every soul who left and every one who stayed." He studied Margaret's face. His smile faded into something gentler. "I knew you when you were small. And I knew your mother." Margaret stepped forward fast. "Where did she go? The locket points to her, but she keeps slipping away from me." Harold pushed back his chair. He crossed to a shelf and ran one finger along the spines. "She didn't vanish like folk said." He pulled down a thin ledger and set it open on the desk. "She left for a cottage past the edge of town. Ivy on every wall. I posted her letters there till they stopped coming." He turned the ledger toward Margaret. A line of faded ink held an address and a date. "That's where she went. That's where she waited." Margaret bent over the ink. Her glow brightened. "A cottage covered in ivy," she repeated. The compass in her hand went still at last. The needle held one direction and did not waver. Not a circle now. A road. "Thank you," Margaret said. Her voice shook. "Go to her," Harold said. "She's been there longer than you know." He closed the ledger and sat again, his task done. They stepped back into the mist. The fog ahead thinned. Far off, Ethan saw a dark shape taking form: a small house wrapped in green, windows lit from within. The compass drew them straight toward it. Margaret did not slow or circle. She walked with her whole face lifted toward the cottage. "She's really there," Margaret whispered. The aimless circling was over. Now a door waited to be knocked, and neither of them knew who would open it.
