Chapter 8

Ethan climbed the hill to the sagging house. Its broken eaves leaned over him. Inside, the crooked windows glowed yellow, and the glowing door stood in the far room. He walked to it and faced the light. He said his wife's name. Then he said it again, louder. The light did not move. No voice came back. He pressed his hand to the door. It felt like cold glass. He called her a third time. Nothing answered. The name alone could not reach her. He stepped back, breathing hard he did not need. A dead man's voice was only breath. He had known that risk. But he had nothing else to carry across. He looked at the handkerchief and the letter in his hand. Keepsakes, but silent ones. They held her memory for him. They did not call to her. Then he remembered the clean corner of his childhood home. He had taken the cloth and the letter. He had left something behind. A small gold box, tucked under the table in the dust. He had not understood it then. Now he did. Ethan went back down the hill and through the boarded wall. The box waited where he had seen it. He lifted it. Scrollwork covered the gold lid. A tiny crank sat at the base. His fingers knew it. She had kept it on their windowsill. She had turned it every night before bed. The tune was theirs. He carried it back up to the glowing door. Beside it he found a worn journal on a ledge, its cover stitched and soft. Shared Journal, he read. They had written in it together, line after line, two hands across years. He opened it. Her writing filled the pages next to his own. He set the journal on the floor against the light, open. Then he turned the crank on the gold box. The tune rose, thin and clear. It was the song she wound every night. It was not his voice. It was hers and his together, the sound of their marriage. The light in the door rippled. For the first time it moved. A shape formed in the glow, faint, a woman's outline. The music pulled her forward. She pressed close to the far side, as if to a window. Her hand lifted against the light, matching the open journal below. Her mouth shaped his name. He could not hear it. But he saw it. Ethan dropped to his knees. She could see him. The music had carried what his voice could not. She knew he was here. But her outline stayed trapped behind the light. Her hand pushed and did not pass through. The door held her on the far side, same as it held him here. He had reached her. He could not reach her. One of them had to open the door, and it would not open for calling alone.
