Chapter 3

The trail led higher into the hills until Fallen saw stone rising through the trees. Not a ruin—a tower. Three stories tall with crenellated walls and narrow windows, built from grey stone that matched the color of their own feathers. It stood alone in a wide clearing, surrounded by trampled earth and broken branches. Signs of a struggle, recent enough that the mud hadn't dried. Fallen approached slowly and found more claw marks on the tower's outer wall, deeper than the ones at the hammock. Something had tried to climb up. Something had been driven back down. The door hung open. Inside, the ground floor was empty except for rope anchors bolted to the walls and a scattering of grey feathers arranged in a spiral. Fallen climbed the interior stairs and found the second floor transformed into a hunting blind. Their sibling had strung rope between the windows, creating sightlines to every approach. Feathers hung from the ceiling on threads, turning slowly in the draft. A warning system. Anyone climbing the stairs would disturb them. Fallen touched one and it spun, catching the light from the window. Their sibling had built this. Planned it. Turned themselves into bait and waited for something to come. On the top floor, Fallen found what their sibling had been hunting. The crystalline creature sat in the center of the room, no longer playful. Its scales had darkened to deep violet, and it growled low in its throat. Behind it, scratched into the stone wall, were words in their sibling's hand: "It follows what shines. Led it here. Going deeper north to finish this." Fallen knelt and the creature's growl softened. It had been left behind. A guardian, or a message. Their sibling wasn't setting traps anymore—they were leading their prey somewhere specific. Somewhere they could end it. Fallen stood and looked north through the tower window. The forest stretched dark and endless, but now they understood the pattern. Their sibling wasn't fleeing or hiding. They were drawing their hunter away from everyone else, taking the threat somewhere it could be dealt with alone. The same choice they'd made before, the one that caused the fall. Protecting others by taking the weight themselves. Fallen had been trying to save their sibling, but their sibling didn't need saving. They needed someone to finish what they'd started. The creature chirped once and leaped to Fallen's shoulder, its claws gentle against their skin. Fallen tucked the message feather into their shirt with the others and descended the tower stairs. They weren't tracking anymore. They were joining the hunt.
