Chapter 1

Farmer Danielle knelt in her prize garden and watched her rare potion cuttings die. She had planted them at dawn, six sprigs of moon-herb she'd traded three seasons of blooms to get. By noon their leaves curled brown. Her old beds grew the best exotic flowers in the whole cove, blooms that won every harvest show. But these herbs needed something her soil could not give. Without them, her dream of brewing real potions would wither too. She dug her fingers into the dirt and tested it. Too plain. Too tired. She had fed this ground for forty years, and now it failed the one crop she wanted most. Danielle stood, wiped her hands on her overalls, and pushed back her wide-brimmed hat. She would find new soil. She walked past her fences into the wild ground beyond, hunting for earth that felt different. She dug in six spots. Every one was worse than her garden. Then a hum rose behind her. A flock of tiny winged creatures swirled down, bright as spilled paint, ladybugs and bees and things she had no names for. They circled her head, then darted toward a low rise she had never crossed. They hovered there, waiting. "You want me to follow?" Danielle asked. She laughed at herself and followed anyway. Over the rise she found a plot already turned. Neat furrows ran in dark, rich rows, as if a plow had passed that morning. She crouched and squeezed a handful. It held together, cool and damp, threaded with green sprouts. This was wild soil, but soil like nothing she'd touched. The little flock settled along the furrows and waited. Danielle ran back for her dying cuttings. She carried them over the rise and pressed each sprig into the strange ground. The winged creatures worked beside her. They dropped seeds she had not brought. They nudged loose stones aside and packed the dirt with quick beating wings. By dusk the herbs stood straight. Their leaves uncurled and went deep green. She stayed to watch through the evening. Moonlight spread over the plot, and Danielle danced a slow turn between the rows, too glad to sit still. Then the soil moved. Near the far furrow, something she had not planted pushed up. It rose fast, thick leafy vines spilling outward, threaded with tiny glowing pebbles like marbles caught in the stems. Blue, pink, gold, they gleamed in the dark. The tendrils curled toward her hand. Danielle had never seen this plant. It was not one of her cuttings. The flock had planted it while she wasn't looking. Her herbs were saved. But now a stranger grew in her new ground, glowing and reaching, and she had no idea what it was or what it would do.
