Chapter 1

Felicity stood at the edge of the clearing, eyes scanning for the perfect spot to build her boutique. She'd need space for the entrance, room for displays, and a view that would make customers stop and stare. This wasn't just about selling clothes. This was about proving she belonged here, that her vision mattered. But when she paced off the dimensions near the center of the clearing, three residents emerged from the tree line to watch. They didn't approach. They just stood there with crossed arms and skeptical eyes. Felicity felt their doubt like a weight on her chest. She pulled out her sketches anyway, holding them up so they could see. Then she grabbed a fallen branch and scratched the outline of her boutique into the dirt—every wall, every window, exactly where it would stand. One of the watchers whispered something to another. Felicity didn't stop. She worked until the wooden frame took shape in her mind, until she could see the striped awning and the sign with her name in bold letters. When she finally looked up, two of them had walked away. But one remained, watching with what might have been curiosity instead of doubt. She needed something they could see, not just imagine. Felicity hauled lumber and nails to the clearing for three days straight, hammering until her hands blistered. The boutique rose plank by plank—rough at first, then shaped and sanded until the wood gleamed. She painted the trim herself, hung the striped awning, and mounted the sign that read Felicity's in swooping letters. Outside the door, she placed a mannequin wearing a gingham dress she'd stayed up all night finishing, complete with her signature hand-stitched cat faces along the hem. The cat ears on the mannequin's head matched her own wooden mask perfectly. By sunset, a small crowd had gathered. They circled the boutique, peered through the windows, touched the painted wood. The resident who'd stayed to watch that first day stepped forward and asked when she'd be open for business. Felicity grinned behind her mask. Soon, she promised. Very soon.
