Felicity FairyPaws knelt beside the glass case and counted moon dust, grain by grain, into the carved stone bowl. She was keeper-in-waiting of the Great Lunar Ledger, and one day she would hold every true name ever spoken. For now, she only kept watch. Moth wings folded. Cat ears twitching. Fairy hands steady. She opened her silver-grey pouch and tipped a careful pinch into the basin. The dust sparkled like crushed stars. She checked her stores. She checked the ledger inside its glass dome. Then she froze. The page where her own name should sit was blank. She checked once. Twice. Three times. Her stomach dropped each time the line stayed empty. How could she keep every soul's name if she had lost her own? So she wrote to the moon. A formal letter, sealed and proper, carried out to the weathered mailbox with the golden crescent flag. She raised the flag. She waited. Days passed. Then weeks. The flag stayed up. The mailbox stayed empty. Each night she lit her ring of white candles and prayed beside them. Wax pooled on the stones. The flames bent and steadied. She whispered the same question into the dark. Maybe the moon was testing her patience. Maybe a good keeper had to earn her own name first. Tonight, she blew out the last candle and made a choice. If the moon would not write back, Felicity would go find the answer herself.
