Chapter 1

Fennec Longwhisker practiced the speech three times before the clan fires, and no one had asked their name. They wanted a seat on the royal council, a chair where a monster could finally shape the laws that caged monsters. But the council counted only voices the clans backed. And the clans did not know a fuzzy, long-eared stranger from anywhere. Fennec's long ears drooped as the drumming started without them. An elder in a feathered cloak rose at the center of the gathering. The cloak was layered with bold plumes, dyed red and green, and every clan head fell silent when it moved. Fennec knew the rule: no stranger spoke here without proof of deeds. The elder's eyes swept the crowd and passed over Fennec like passing over empty ground. So Fennec stopped waiting to be counted. They stepped past the fire and told the clans a plain thing. "A thorn-monster stalks the eastern wood. It has taken three of your foragers. I will bring it down and lay its remains here, before you." Laughter rippled. A stranger promising to kill a beast that seasoned hunters feared. The elder only nodded once, which meant: try, and die if you must. Fennec did not go alone. In the eastern wood they had spent a season taming a beast the clans thought untamable. It came now at Fennec's whistle, a sleek panther cloaked in shadow-dark fur, purple lines rippling along its flank. The thorn-monster waited in the ravine, a towering thing of twisted vines and jagged spines, its jaws lined with teeth. It lunged. The panther struck low while Fennec drove a spear through the creature's woody chest. The thorn-monster shuddered and fell still. Fennec dragged the broken husk back to the fires and dropped it before the elder. Bound vines, snapped thorns, dead buds—proof no one could argue. The panther paced at Fennec's side, calm under a hundred stunned stares. The elder stepped down from the center. Slowly, the clan heads bent their heads, one after another. The elder lifted the feathered cloak from their own shoulders and set it around Fennec's. "Now you have a name here," the elder said. "The clans stand with you." The backing was won. But the cloak was heavy, and Fennec understood the weight at once. The clans had not backed a stranger. They had backed the monster who killed a beast and tamed another. They would expect that Fennec keep proving it. And the royal council, Fennec knew, would not simply open its doors to a monster the clans now feared as much as followed.
