Chapter 1

Fennel Thistledown opened her herb drawers one by one, and every one of them was nearly empty. A girl stood at her cottage door that morning, waiting for a first lesson, and Fennel had almost nothing left to teach with. Her knees ached on the stone floor. She was seventy-one, and she wanted one good apprentice before those knees quit for good. She could not train a beginner on dust and stems. The girl had walked far to learn healing. Fennel had promised her a lesson on drying and sorting. Now the big jars held only crumbs. Fennel pressed a hand to her lower back and stood up slowly. She had used the last of her stock on a fevered farmer two nights past. She had forgotten how fast a winter ate a store. "Sit at the table," Fennel told the girl. "A lesson needs plants. So we fetch plants." She pulled on her apron with the big front pockets and stepped into the garden. Vines and flowers crowded the walls of her thatched cottage. Bees worked the blooms. A blue firebird perched on the chimney, its feathers glowing like cool flame. Fennel knew every leaf out here. But most of her garden plants were common. A true lesson needed something rare, something worth remembering. She led the girl past the beds to the shaded edge of the yard. There grew a low cluster of soft, fuzzy leaves, tinted warm orange, gathered tight like a small tuft. Fennel had planted it years ago and rarely cut it. "Feel this," Fennel said. She guided the girl's fingers over the velvet leaves. "This calms a burn. But cut it wrong and the whole clump dies. So we take only the outer leaves." The girl reached to grab a fistful. Fennel caught her wrist. "Slow," Fennel said. "Herb-lore is not grabbing. It is knowing when to stop." The girl nodded and pinched off one leaf, then another, careful now. Fennel showed her how to lay each leaf in the apron pocket without crushing it. They worked down the row. Fennel named every plant they passed and made the girl repeat each name aloud. By the time the pockets bulged, the girl could name six herbs she had never seen before. They carried the fresh cuttings inside and spread them on the table. The empty jars no longer mattered. Fennel had a full apron and a student who now knew how to pick. "That was the lesson," Fennel said. "The stock was never the point. The picking is." The girl smiled and asked when the next lesson would come. Fennel looked at the orange leaves drying on the wood. She had answered today's need. But one small clump would not feed weeks of teaching. To train this girl properly, she needed a real supply, and the nearest wild stands lay far past her aching knees could carry her alone.
