Chapter 21

Three poisons remained, and Fennel meant to teach them before winter. The lava beast kept her garden warm through the cold weeks, and her students came each morning without fail. Lily learned the last three plants from the specimens Fennel kept dried on her shelf. Oliver pressed her on doses she once knew by heart. Some days her memory slipped, and Lily filled the gap. Fennel let her. That was the point now. Her knees grew worse. She stopped walking to the garden. She taught from the chair by the fire, hands folded, voice steady. Lily and Oliver carried the herbs to her and named each one aloud. When she asked hard questions, they answered without her help. She began to feel like a woman watching a boat she had built sail off without her aboard. One evening she finished the last poison. She held up the dried sprig and made Oliver describe the leaf, the smell, the way it killed. He got every part right. Lily added the one thing he missed. Fennel lowered the sprig and looked at them both. "That's all of them," she said. "A dozen poisons. Every remedy I know. It's in you now, and it's in the books." Her voice cracked. "There's nothing left I can teach you." Lily set down the basket. "There's plenty," she said. "You'll show us more tomorrow. You always do." She corrected herself. "You mostly do." Oliver said nothing. He watched Fennel's face the way he watched a patient's color. He crossed to the fire and banked it high, then laid a fresh log where it would catch slow through the night. "Warm enough," he said. "Sleep, then. We'll come at first light." Fennel let them help her to bed. Lily tucked the quilt to her chin. Oliver checked the shutters against the wind. At the door Lily turned back. "You did it," she said, plain as always. "Three students. Two of us stayed. We can heal without you standing over us." She paused. "But we'd rather you stood there anyway." "Go on," Fennel said. "First light." They went. Fennel lay in the warm dark and listened to the log settle in the grate. Her knees did not ache now. Nothing did. She thought of fifty years of sick children and broken fevers, of a girl who walked home a healer, of two more asleep near her fire. The work would go on without her hands. She had made sure of it. She closed her eyes and did not open them. At first light Oliver found her. He touched her wrist the way she had taught him, feeling for the pulse that was not there. Lily stood in the doorway with the morning basket and understood before he spoke. Oliver folded Fennel's hands over the quilt. "She finished," he said. "Every last one." Outside, the lava beast warmed the beds for a garden Fennel would not tend again.
