Chapter 1

Fenrir Moonscar had studied the marks on his chest for years, and he still could not read a single line. They circled the crescent birthmark like tiny black claws pressed into his white fur. He knew what the shape meant. His mother had told him once, before the ice took her. It marked him as heir to a lost lunar bloodline. But the ring of symbols kept its secret, and without their meaning, he had nowhere to search. Snow packed the mouth of his lair. He crouched by the cold ash of his fire and traced the marks again with one claw. Meaningless. Then he remembered the stories. An old wolf, exiled north, who could read the dead tongues. If anyone alive knew these signs, it was him. The journey took three days across open ice. A wolf pup trailed him for the last mile, drawn by the scent of his kill. Fenrir dropped a strip of meat behind him and did not slow. He found the exile in a shallow den, older than the stories claimed. Gray fur bristled around a scarred face. Cold blue eyes lifted from a bone he was carving. "You smell of the south," the elder said. "Turn around." "I came for reading, not welcome." Fenrir stepped into the den and pulled his fur wrap aside. The birthmark showed plain in the dim light. "You know these marks." The carving stopped. The old wolf rose, slower than his glare suggested, and pressed a rough thumb against Fenrir's chest. He traced each symbol in turn. His breath came short. "I know them," he said at last. "I hoped I never would again." He named himself Coldfang, and said the pack had cast him out for reading things better left buried. He had not spoken these signs aloud in forty years. "Then speak them now," Fenrir said. Coldfang read the ring twice before he trusted it. "It is not a name," he said. "It is a direction. And a warning." His claw stopped on the topmost mark. "This says: the bloodline sleeps beneath the drowned shrine. Wake it, and you wake what guards it." Fenrir's heart struck hard. "Where is the shrine?" "East, past the black water. The moon-shrine sank when your line fell." Coldfang stepped back. His eyes had gone flat with fear. "You should not go. The last heir who read those marks did not return. I buried his teeth myself." The pup nosed into the den and pressed against Fenrir's leg. He did not push it away. "I have a name now," Fenrir said. "And a place." He turned toward the cold mouth of the den, the wind already pulling at his fur. He knew where to search at last. He also knew that something waited there, and that it was awake.
