Chapter 5

They passed under the last arch of ice and the shrine rose before them. Gray stone wolves snarled from every pillar. A golden crescent hung above the dark doorway. Fenrir set the pup down. Then the birthmark on his chest flared. The pain drove him to one knee. The crescent burned like a brand pressed to his skin. He clawed at his fur. The closer he crawled to the door, the hotter it grew. Frost dropped beside him. Her paw found his shoulder. "It did this to him too," she said. Her voice shook. She pulled the cracked moon pendant from her belt. The white stone was split in fractured pieces, held by thin gold. "He wore this on the shore. When I found the locket, this lay in the sand beside it. I thought it was just his. Now I see the crack." Fenrir stared through the pain. "What crack?" "He scratched a warning inside the locket. A crescent, cut in half." She turned the pendant. "He was telling me the mark splits you. It doesn't guide. It feeds." Her eyes filled. "He crawled toward the door like you're doing now. It burned the life out of him." Fenrir looked at the doorway. The burning pulled him forward like a hook in his chest. He could feel it wanting him inside. He remembered Coldfang's warning. The last heir never returned. Now he knew why. The mark did not lead the heir home. It dragged him to a fire. He pushed back against it. He dug his claws into the wet stone and stopped crawling. The pain spiked. He roared. But he did not move forward. A pale light woke inside the shrine. From the dark doorway stepped a wolf made of mist. Its fur shone like moon on snow. Its eyes glowed steady and blue. The spectral wolf stopped between Fenrir and the door. It looked at the burning mark, then at Fenrir's face. The burning changed. It did not cool, but it turned. The heat pulled sideways, away from the door, toward the misty wolf. Fenrir understood. The door was not the end of the path. The door was a trap the mark obeyed. The living guardian was the true keeper. "The mark isn't killing me for no reason," Fenrir said. "It's pointing past the door. He never saw this. He went in." He gripped Frost's paw. "Your brother obeyed it. I won't." He forced himself to his feet and faced the spectral wolf instead of the doorway. The moment he did, the birthmark's fire dropped to a low, steady warmth. The pain let go. He gasped and stood tall. The misty wolf turned and walked, not into the shrine, but around it, toward a lower path in the stone. It looked back once. Frost stared at Fenrir, alive with new fear and hope. "It wants us to follow," Fenrir said. "Not inside. Around." He lifted the pup. "Then that's where the truth is."
