Chapter 1

Feyre Nightwhisper pressed a knife against her own arm, but not to cut. She wanted the marks to burn, to wake. The swirling lines inked her skin from wrist to shoulder, black and gold like her dress. Her mother had told her the truth before she died. The marks held sealed power. That power could break the curse that killed every woman in her bloodline before her fortieth year. Feyre was thirty-eight. She had two years, and she could not read a single mark. She pushed the knife harder. The lines stayed silent. No heat, no glow, nothing. Blood welled where the blade bit too deep. She swore and wrapped the cut in cloth. Guessing was going to kill her faster than the curse. Someone knew this script. Someone had to. Feyre thought of the old library across the city, the gothic one with towers that scraped the clouds. Her mother had called it the place where all forgotten tongues went to die. If any record of the old fae language survived, it lived there. The great doors groaned when she pushed them open. Dust hung in the light from a hundred stained windows. A small figure stood between the shelves, hood up, sorting books by touch alone. The librarian did not turn around. "You bleed on my floor," the old fae woman said. "Tie it tighter." Feyre stopped. "You can smell that?" "I smell fear worse." The woman faced her now. Blue eyes caught the colored light under her hood. Silver designs ran across her pale cape. "You carry marks you cannot read. I have watched three of your line walk through those doors. None left in time." Feyre's throat tightened. "My mother came here?" "Miriam Ashwood forgets no face." She beckoned with one thin hand. "Show me your arm." Feyre rolled back her sleeve. Miriam traced the swirls without touching them. Her lips moved. Then she went still. "These are not words," Miriam said. "They are a key. The lock is written elsewhere." She crossed to a locked cabinet and drew out a heavy book. Timeworn leather, cracked, studded with green and purple stones. Gold symbols crowded its cover. "This names the source of your tattoos. Read it with your marks beside it, and they will answer." Feyre reached for the book. Miriam did not let go. "The last woman who opened this did not survive the reading," Miriam said. "The power does not wake gently. It judges first." Feyre looked at the cloth on her arm, already soaked red. Two years. No gentler road. "Give it to me," she said. Miriam released the book. The weight of it dropped into Feyre's hands like a stone. The symbols on the cover warmed against her fingers, and for the first time, the marks on her arms began to ache in answer.
