Chapter 8

Anny led them out of the Ebon Archive at dusk. She carried the glowing soulbinding book under one arm, held close like a child. "A bond hides in a library," she said. "It shows itself on old ground." She did not slow for them to answer. Feyre followed, and Lucien walked at her side, saying nothing. The standing stones waited in a ring, gray and leaning, hemmed by thick trees. Anny set the book on a flat stone at the center. The symbols glowed brighter here, blue and violet in the failing light. "Stand inside," she told them. "Face each other. Do not speak the curse-name. Not yet." Feyre stepped into the circle. Lucien stepped in across from her. Anny opened the book and found two linked marks. "A true bond answers," she said. "Feyre, trace the first mark on your arm. Lucien traces the second. If the halves match, the stones will show it. If they do not, the power stirs and finds nothing. Then it turns on her." Feyre looked at Lucien. His grandmother had sent him. A stranger with no proof but a word. "If this is wrong," Feyre said, "it kills me instead of him." "Yes," Anny said. She did not soften it. Lucien held Feyre's eyes. "Then draw yours first," he said. "Watch mine. If I falter, stop." Feyre lifted her hand. She found the swirling mark near her wrist and traced it, center outward, breath and bind and seal. The line warmed under her finger. Across from her, Lucien bared his forearm. She had never looked for a mark there. But a faint silver shape rose on his skin, matching the second symbol in the book stroke for stroke. He traced it. Breath. Bind. Seal, with its two bends. His hand did not shake. The stones answered. A low hum rose from the ground. A thread of light lifted from Feyre's wrist and crossed the air to Lucien's arm. It pulled tight between them, blue melting into violet, the same colors as the book. The hum climbed into Feyre's chest and did not take. It held. It filled her instead of eating her. Then the light sank back into their skin. The circle went quiet. Anny closed the book. "It is confirmed," she said. "The bond is whole. He holds the other half." Feyre let out a breath she had held for days. The guessing was over. She would not die testing a stranger. The man across from her was truly her bonded half, proven on old ground, with the stones as witness. But the thread had woken something. Her tattoos ached now, warm and restless, no longer only a lock. The power was listening. "The name is safe to speak with him here," Anny said. "But once you wake it, Feyre, you cannot seal it again." She looked at the humming marks. "Choose when. Choose soon. It will not sleep much longer."
