Chapter 1

Finn Greyfoot had read the fire story a hundred times, and it still refused to tell him where to go. His mother Mara used to trace the page while she read it. A wolf walks until he finds a fire someone left burning for him. Then the story stopped. No town. No road. No map. Finn was cast out of his pack, and this book was the only thing that named the place he was walking toward. Now the book told him nothing. He sat outside a crooked stone cottage with watchful gargoyles on its roof. Raven Meadows had taken him in weeks ago and given him a corner by her hearth. He should have been grateful. Instead he kept the book open on his knees and read the same page until the words blurred. His clothes were still ragged. His feet still itched to move. But he could not move toward a place with no direction. Raven came around the corner carrying an armful of split wood. She saw him hunched over the book and stopped. "You've read that page all morning," she said. "You memorize it yet?" "It doesn't say where the fire is." Finn's voice cracked. "My mother promised there was a place I'd belong. This book was supposed to show me. It just ends." Raven dropped the wood by a ring of stones. She knelt and stacked kindling without looking at him. "So the book's broken," she said. "You waiting for it to fix itself?" "I don't know which way to walk." She struck a spark. Flame caught the dry kindling and climbed. Logs had already been set around the ring for sitting. Raven fed the fire until it burned bright and steady. Then she sat back on a log and jerked her chin at the empty seat beside her. "Come here." Finn closed the book and came. The heat pushed against his face. Raven pointed at the flames. "Someone leaves a fire burning," she said. "That's the whole story, right?" "Right." "I built this fire before you were born hungry at my gate. I built it for anyone who walks in cold." She looked at him flat, daring him to argue. "The book doesn't name the place because the place isn't on a map. It's whoever keeps the fire lit." Finn stared at the flames. He had been reading the book as directions. It was never directions. It was a promise about people, not roads. "Then my mother wasn't sending me somewhere," he said slowly. "She was telling me what to look for." "Yeah." Raven poked the fire. "And you're already sitting at one." Finn shut the book and held it against his chest. For the first time since the pack drove him out, he did not feel the pull to keep walking. But a harder question took its place. If the fire was people, he had to earn a seat at it. Sitting was not the same as belonging. And he did not yet know what this haven would ask of him.
