Finnegan Graves wiped down his tattoo gun and studied the blank appointment book on his counter. Another day in Deadville, another chance to ink stories into gray skin that would hold them forever. He'd spent years learning his craft, perfecting each line and shade, all so he could give the undead what they needed most—their memories made permanent. The living forgot things easily, but the dead? They needed help remembering who they were before they crossed over. The neon red sign above his shop flickered to life as evening settled in. Finnegan stepped outside and set up his weathered easel on the sidewalk, clipping a fresh canvas to the metal frame. He pulled out his charcoal and began sketching a new design—a ship's wheel surrounded by crashing waves. A practice piece, something to test before he put needle to skin. His fingers moved with certainty across the canvas, each stroke deliberate. The undead who passed by slowed to watch him work. Some nodded. Others stopped and stared at the windows behind him, where dozens of his designs hung on display. He finished the wheel's last spoke and stepped back to examine his work. The design was good, but not perfect. He could refine the wave patterns, make them flow better around the edges. That was the thing about mastery—it never ended. Every piece taught him something new, prepared him for the next client who would walk through his door and ask him to mark their story into their skin forever. Finnegan rolled his shoulders and looked up at his shop sign glowing against the darkening sky. This was his place. This was where he would become the artist the dead needed him to be.
