Chapter 3

The new forest stood tall now, but Fladrif could not rest. The vast thing beneath it kept moving. It shifted deep under the roots, slow and huge, and he did not know its shape. He pressed both hands to the soil and listened. The pulse down there was not a tree. It was older. He could not tell if it would help the young forest or crush it. To reach for it wrong might wake it in anger. He needed to know first. Bregalad crouched beside him, red eyes fixed on the ground. He had lost a tree named Linhir to axes once and had planted nothing since. Now he pushed his hand into the dust and pulled it back fast. "Something big," he said. "Big. It wants up." He did not soften it. "Touch it and it wakes. Then it decides." Elmwood knelt on the other side. His bark hung in deep, sad seams. He had left a sick tree once and never returned, and he carried that still. "Don't grab at it," he said. "Feel it out slow. Learn what it is before it learns what we are." Kjell stood apart, palm flat to the stone, reading the ground the way he read old runes. "It's turning under you," he said. "Not toward you. Not away. Waiting." He said no more. Fladrif closed his eyes and stopped moving. He did not reach. He listened only. He counted the beat below the way he counted rings, slow, patient, one at a time. The pulse came in long waves. He matched his own heartbeat to it, soft, so the thing would not feel a stranger clawing in. He offered nothing but rhythm. He asked nothing. He only kept time with it. The waves changed. The huge pulse rose to meet his. It was not hunger. It was a root system older than the wastes, buried when the last forest died. It had slept under the stone for ages, holding water no dead ground could keep. It felt the young roots above and it wanted to feed them. Fladrif drew his hand back slowly. "It's not a threat," he said. "It's the old forest's roots. Still alive. It's been holding water all this time." Bregalad stared at the ground. "Then it feeds them," he said. "It feeds them." Fladrif nodded, but he felt the cost of what he had learned. The buried roots reached toward the young trees now that he had answered. Water climbed. The forest would drink deep and grow faster than three tired ents could ever guide. Below, the great mass strained upward against stone that had held it for centuries. He heard the first grind of rock beginning to split. He had not woken a threat. He had woken something willing, and now it was rising, and nothing he had would slow it down.
