Chapter 1

Flower Lifia felt the seventh ring go quiet at dawn, and she was already too late. She is a purple spirit shaped from the entire flower of life pattern — not one bloom inside it, but all of them at once. When one bloom fell silent last season, she moved another to steady the ring. Three cracked in answer. She has not touched the pattern since. Today the silent bloom is not a broken sister but a scattered sibling, sleeping inside a stone somewhere in Alaria, and she means to wake them before the pattern collapses. She followed the pull to the old walkway where a marble fountain still ran clear. Water climbed the basin and fell in even threads. She knelt at the rim and listened through her rings, counting inward. Six rings answered. The seventh gave her a thin, cold hum, like a struck bowl left too long in a cellar. Then she smelled it. Bitter sap. Wet ash. The blight from the corrupted heartwood grove had crept farther in the night. It was moving toward the quiet places — the mossy corners and forgotten seats where scattered spirits slept in stone. Her sibling was one of those sleepers. If the blight reached the stone first, the bloom would go permanently silent, and every ring she carried would fail at once. She stood and ran the path she knew. Past a purple chair overrun with flowers. Past a stone angel holding an open book. Past a mirror ringed in tarot cards and vines. At each, she pressed her palm flat and listened. Nothing. The hum in her seventh ring grew colder. The blight was closing the distance faster than she was. She reached the last place — a round pavement inlaid with moon and chakra work, and beyond it a tree grown from interlocking flower-of-life rings. Dark threads of blight were already crossing the pavement's outer edge, eating the paint. At the base of the tree lay a small grey stone, half-swallowed by moss. She felt the silent bloom inside it. She also felt the blight, two arm-lengths away and coming. She could not move a bloom. She would not crack three more. So she did the only thing left: she lay down over the stone and let her seventh ring rest against it, spirit to stone, and she spoke her sibling's shape into the silence — not a name she knew, but the exact place they belonged in her pattern. The stone warmed. A single hairline seam opened along its side. Inside, something answered, faint but there. The blight touched her outer ring and hissed back from the light of the contact. She had found the stone. She had not opened it. The blight now knew where she was, and where her sibling lay, and it had not stopped coming.
