Chapter 6

Inside the warded house, the air held still. Stained glass threw soft color across the floor. Lifia's sibling had curled on a low bench near the door, rings finally quiet. Lifia should have felt the same rest. She did not. The prayer Mother Angel had named at the arch sat in her without a shape. A prayer said back to me when you are able. Lifia did not know the words. She did not know the god. She could not close her eyes until she did. Mother Angel moved through the front room with a pitcher of water. Her blonde curls caught the window light and threw small sparks along the walls. She set the pitcher down and knelt beside the bench. She did not press. She waited, hands open on her knees, the way she had waited under the arch. "I owe you a prayer," Lifia said. "Tell me the prayer. I cannot rest until I know what I carry." "The prayer is not written, little one," Mother Angel said. Her voice stayed even, kind. "It takes its shape from the one who owes it. That is the whole cost. You must find its name yourself." "Then I cannot pay." "You can. Come." Mother Angel led her up a narrow stair to a small side room. A stone angel stood in the center, wings folded back, a book open in her carved hands. Words were cut into the page. Thoughts become things. Ask, believe, receive. Lifia had no thoughts to become things. She had a pattern, and a strain in the seventh ring, and a sibling downstairs who was alive because a stranger had opened a door. "Stand at the book," Mother Angel said. "Say what is true. The prayer will surface." Lifia stepped close. The stone was cold. She thought of the moon-chakra pavement, the moss, the crack of light when her sibling first pushed back. She thought of the fairies who gave what they had. She thought of the arch when the black seam tried the ward and slid off. "I did not do it alone," Lifia said. The words came slow. "I was not enough. Others gave. You gave. Let me be a debt that pays back." The carved page warmed under her hand. A single line lifted from the stone in gold and settled into her seventh ring. She felt it lodge there, a small bright weight, next to the strain. Mother Angel smiled. "That is your prayer. Carry it. Say it back when someone else stands where you stood." Lifia's rings loosened. She could rest now. But the gold line in her seventh ring pulsed once, then again, in a rhythm that was not hers. A signal. Small, steady, and pointed outward through the wards like a thread pulled taut. Something on the other side had felt it catch.
