Flurry stood at the edge of his festival grounds and wiggled his twig fingers. The pavilion, the stage, and the ice wall looked ready, but something was missing. He needed to learn what made people laugh before they would come. His coal buttons hummed a curious tune. He waddled toward the tree line where he'd spotted movement earlier. A family had been there yesterday, and maybe they'd left clues behind. Past the frozen birch trees, Flurry found a small workshop covered in fresh snow. Red paint showed through white patches on the walls. He pressed his carrot nose against a window and peered inside. Shelves lined the room, packed with toy drums and spinning tops. A workbench held wooden figures with silly faces painted on them. Some had crossed eyes. Others had tongues sticking out. Flurry's coal buttons played five bright notes. These objects made children giggle. He needed to remember this for his festival. He turned from the workshop and spotted copper glinting near a woodpile. A brazier sat half-buried in snow, its metal bowl filled with cold coals. Flurry lifted it and shook off the ice. Warmth would bring people to the festival grounds on freezing nights. They would stay longer if they felt comfortable. He tucked the brazier under one twig arm and kept searching. Something sparkled beneath a pine branch. Flurry bent down and brushed away the snow. A crystal jar lay on its side, frost clinging to the glass. He picked it up and held it to the light. The jar glowed faintly when he giggled at his reflection in the smooth surface. His buttons vibrated as golden sparkles flickered inside the crystal. This could hold the magic that laughter created. Flurry clutched the jar to his chest and headed back to the festival grounds. He understood now—funny things drew laughter, warmth kept people close, and magic needed a place to gather and grow.
