Chapter 10
Pembroke stood cornered by the golden grain. The letter with his name was in Aldric's fist. Flux thought the hard part was done. Then Aldric spoke, and the alliance began to crack.
"We take this to the full council tomorrow," Aldric said. He tapped the letter. "Quiet. One rotten man, named and removed. The ring holds. I keep my seat and clean it from inside."
Flux shook their head. "One man? He bought votes. Others sold them. You want to trim a branch. I came to fell the tree."
"Fell it and you fell me too," Aldric said. "Every councilor. Even the honest ones." His voice stayed flat, but his jaw set. "I gave you a way in. I did not give you my whole council."
Mirabel watched them both. She had bought Flux this moment by naming Pembroke aloud, and she counted the cost now. "He's stalling," she said to Flux. "By tomorrow Pembroke warns three friends. They bury the letter. You get one traitor and a locked door."
"I keep my word," Aldric said, sharp for once.
"Words rot," Mirabel said. "I watched a client spend mine, then throw me out. Slow always favors the ones inside."
Celestine stepped from the crowd where she had waited. Flux had worn her borrowed face to pass the guards, and now the guards saw the real one beside the copy's maker. She looked at Aldric's grip on the letter. "Give me the letter," she said.
Aldric held it back. "Why."
"Because a debt is a debt." She did not explain further. She turned to Flux. "He won't burn his own house. You will. Someone has to hold the middle."
Flux understood. If they seized the letter, Aldric walked. If they let Aldric keep it, the ring survived. Neither choice held the alliance.
So Flux made a third. They stepped between the two councilors. "Copy it," they said. From their sleeve they shook loose the swarm that had worn Celestine's face. The fleas spread across the letter's ink, reading every stroke, and lifted the words onto themselves.
"Now there are two," Flux said. "You keep the paper, Aldric. Take your quiet vote tomorrow. Remove Pembroke." They cupped the swarm. "But this copy goes wide. To every dimension the council walled off. Let them read who sold their doors shut."
Aldric's mouth thinned. "That ends me."
"That ends the wall," Flux said. "You get your one traitor. I get my tree. We both stop pretending we wanted the same thing."
Mirabel almost smiled. Celestine gave one short nod.
Aldric folded the letter into his robe. "Tomorrow, then. After that, we are not allies."
"We never were," Flux said. "We were useful to each other."
He left first, into the crowd. The alliance was over, cleanly. Flux held a swarm that carried the council's crime, and no one left to slow its spread.
