Chapter 16

The proof sat on the dark table. The grain heap shimmered between Flux and the councilors. But six frightened members still had the votes to bury it all. A confession meant nothing if a majority voted it down. Flux needed one loyal seat to break, and none of the six would give it. The old councilor gathered himself. "We can still call for a vote," he said. "On the record. Right now. We rule the evidence inadmissible. A break-in taints everything. Your name is on the letter, thief. Six of us decide, and the rest fall in line." Flux felt the room tilt against them. Aldric's morning vote had removed one man. It had not touched the others. The math still belonged to the corrupt. Then a door on the far wall opened. An old man stepped through in dark red robes trimmed with gold. A round medal hung at his chest, stamped with a sheaf of grain. He carried a thick ledger under one arm and set it down beside Mirabel's cloth without looking at anyone. This was Cornelius Wheatley, the council's keeper of the grain reserves. "You want a clean vote," Wheatley said. He tapped the grain heap. "This came from the reserve. My reserve." He opened his ledger to a marked page. "Aldric pulled funds three harvests back. No paperwork. Numbers too clean to be honest. I filed it. I dated the letter that told me to drop it." The old councilor's face went gray. "That has nothing to do with today." "It has everything to do with the vote," Wheatley said, flat and final. "You want to rule on evidence. Then rule on mine too. Every seat that touched this grain votes on its own crime." Mirabel laughed once, dry. "He kept a ledger too. Grain men always do." Wheatley did not smile. "I love the reserve. I hate what you did to it. Both true." The six looked at each other. A vote to dismiss the evidence now meant Wheatley reading each buyer aloud, on record, to every dimension. There was no clean version of it left. Flux saw the moment turn. "Call your vote," they said. "He'll name the sellers as you raise your hands. Every dimension watches which hand goes up." The old councilor lowered his arm. One by one, the six sat. No hand rose. Without the vote, the evidence stood. The corruption was on the record and could not be buried. Wheatley closed his ledger. "It's logged now. Public. That part is done." But the council still held their doors and their fold. The chamber was sealed, and Flux had won only the vote, not the room. Aldric had never answered for the grain. And the man who had trapped Flux here in the first place, Bain Pembroke, was still out in the folds, free.
