Chapter 18

The escape door was sealed. The council could not slip away. But Flux stood in the trapped chamber and saw the flaw in their own win. The six sat with the record beside them, and no one else could see it. A reckoning inside a locked fold changed nothing outside it. Flux needed witnesses. Real ones, from other dimensions, watching this room. And the room had no window left open. Emory tapped the empty jar. "I know someone who moves what should not be moved," they said. "An archivist. He runs the Archive of Struck Names." Flux folded a small seam in the air. The seam opened onto shelves of drifting letters, then onto a cramped room stacked with paper. A thin figure looked up, ink stains on his hands, a scent-file open under his nose. Vesper Inscription. He did not startle. He sniffed the seam Flux had cut. "You smell like a room that wants to stay closed," Vesper said. "I keep names people erase. Not audiences." "I have a record no one can reach," Flux said. "Six councilors. Proven corrupt. Sealed in." Vesper studied the ledgers through the seam. He leaned in and smelled them. "Real," he said. "Every one." He closed his file. "Then you don't need me to prove it. You need it seen." He reached into a dark shelf and lifted a jar of black hush. Inside, voices pressed like coiled rope. "Suppressed testimony," he said. "Every word a council buried." He set it down. "But hush stays hush. You need the opposite." Vesper stepped back and let out a low breath into the dark. The room dimmed. From the shadows they came, drawn by darkness itself, never called. Moths. Their wings shone like stained glass. The Remembrance. "They find people by presence in the dark," Vesper said. "They carry buried memory. Show them a room worth remembering, and they show it everywhere." A moth landed on the open ledger. Its wings drank the words. The old councilor lunged to swat it and jerked back, burned. "Do not touch them," the swarm said, plain and final. Flux lifted the clapperless bell from the table. "Witness this room," they said. "Then fly." The swarm read the sealed doors, the six frightened faces, the record no one could bury. Each moth took one image and lifted. They poured through Flux's folded seam and scattered across every dimension the darkness touched. In a thousand rooms, someone in the dark would see the trapped council and the proof beside them. The old councilor watched the last moth vanish. "You can't undo that," he said. "I know," Flux said. The reckoning was no longer sealed. It was seen. But Vesper lingered at the seam, one unfiled name in his coat. "You made the whole void watch," he said. "So did someone else. The one hunting your missing ledger just learned exactly where you are."
