Chapter 2

Freya ran the pack every morning for three days, and every time they reached the marker post with the weathered journal wedged in its rocks, something different broke. The first day, Sable hesitated. The second day, she didn't hesitate but two of the middle dogs did, pulling opposite directions while Kova surged past. The third day, Sable held steady but Kova anticipated her and broke early, dragging half the team with her before the lines went taut. Freya stopped recording observations on her tracking sheet and started writing questions instead. What was Sable reading in the pack that made her slow down? What did Kova see that told her when to move? She filled two pages with questions she couldn't answer. On the fourth morning, Freya drove stakes into the frozen ground at both ends of the training course and strung a long rope between them, marking the full distance they'd need to cover without fracturing. She walked the line and stopped at the marker post. The journal sat wedged between two rocks, pages stiff with ice. She pulled it free and opened it. The writing inside was faded and strange, someone else's story that had nothing to do with hers. She closed it and set it back, but this time she turned it so the spine faced away from the trail. When she ran the team that afternoon, Sable passed the post without slowing. The pack held formation for another quarter mile. Then Kova broke position anyway, and the lines tangled just like before. Freya spent the evening at her kitchen table with her tracking sheet spread flat. She'd written down every fracture point, every position change, every moment one dog challenged another. The pattern was there. Kova wasn't reacting to the marker post or the terrain. She was reacting to Sable's attention. Whenever Sable focused too hard on the trail ahead, Kova saw the gap and moved. Whenever Sable checked the pack behind her, Kova held. Freya circled three entries where Sable had glanced back and the formation had stayed tight. Her grandfather had written that a lead dog didn't just pull the sled. A lead dog held the pack together by feeling when it started to come apart. Sable was already doing that. She just didn't trust it yet. Freya folded the tracking sheet and tucked it into her grandfather's journal. Tomorrow she would run them again, and this time she wouldn't stop the sled when the lines tangled. She would let Sable feel the pull from behind, let her learn that the pack fractured when she stopped paying attention to it. Six weeks was enough time if Sable decided to lead instead of waiting to be told. Freya closed the journal and looked out at the kennel yard. Sable stood at the fence, watching the house. Kova paced in her pen. The rest of the dogs had already settled for the night. Freya had forty chances left, but she wouldn't need all of them. Sable had already chosen. She just needed to know Freya had seen it.
