Chapter 1
Fuzzy Willowmist wanted one thing more than anything: to throw the biggest festival Leavenwood had ever seen. But Fuzzy had never spoken to a crowd. So the whole dream stayed locked inside one small, fuzzy purple chest, behind two big blue eyes that always looked at the ground.
Today the crowd had come to Fuzzy. Half the town gathered under the blue pine tree, its branches heavy with clusters of purple fruit. Someone had asked who would plan this year's harvest gathering. Now they waited. Fuzzy stood near the trunk, tail curled tight, heart slamming.
Say it, Fuzzy thought. Say the festival. But the words stuck. The faces blurred. Fuzzy opened their mouth and nothing came out. A few people started to turn away.
Then a hand rested on Fuzzy's shoulder. It was Shira Heartwood, the tall girl with long red braids who fed the town's stray cats and never raised her voice. Shira was the only one who ever sat with Fuzzy in silence and made silence feel safe. Her sweater was covered in little red hearts. Her fingers gave a gentle squeeze.
"You don't have to shout," Shira whispered. "Just tell me. I'll be right here."
Fuzzy looked up at her kind, shy smile. The blur in the crowd softened. Fuzzy turned so Shira stood between them and all those eyes, like a warm wall.
"I want a festival," Fuzzy said. The voice came out small. Shira leaned close and nodded, so Fuzzy said it again, louder. "I want to throw a festival. The biggest one Leavenwood has ever had."
The nearest people stopped. Fuzzy's paws shook, but the words kept coming. "Lights in the pine trees. Music. Fruit for everyone. Games under the golden tower with the unicorn on top." Fuzzy pointed toward the gleaming spire that rose above the rooftops, its winding steps catching the sun.
A hush spread. Then a child clapped. Then more hands joined, until the whole crowd was cheering. Someone shouted, "Fuzzy's festival!" and others took up the words.
Shira beamed. "You did it," she said.
Fuzzy could barely breathe. For the first time, the whole town knew the dream. The secret was out, and no one had laughed.
But the cheering changed shape fast. People started calling questions. "When is it?" "Who's in charge of the food?" "Can we use the golden tower?" "How big, exactly?" A woman pulled out a notebook. A man asked how much fruit Fuzzy planned to gather.
Fuzzy's smile froze. They had spoken the dream aloud, and now the whole town expected Fuzzy to lead it. Every face looked to Fuzzy, waiting for a plan.
Fuzzy had won the crowd. Now Fuzzy had to actually build the festival, and had no idea where to begin.
