Chapter 1

Gael Morrow spoke one word to the aliens, and it meant three different things by the time it left her mouth. She stood in the transit lounge, the last human left who could answer them at all. Outside the curved windows, the alien ship waited. Its crew waited for her reply. Somewhere out in the dark, thousands of human survivors drifted between the stars, and Gael needed the aliens to carry her message to all of them. She could not send it. Every phrase she said kept changing meaning before it landed. She pressed her ink-stained fingers to her notebook and read her own careful notes. The alien greeting sat there in her handwriting. She had recorded it four times. Four times it came out different. The same sound meant "friend" one hour and "threat" the next. The translator clipped to her ear only fed her the shifting mess. She could not trust a single word. The little translator organism sat on the console beside her. Its patterned body glowed soft blue, and its wide eye tracked her face. Gael had studied it for weeks. Now she watched it more closely than her notes. When she spoke the greeting, the creature's fins rose. When she changed her pitch, the fins dropped flat. That was the answer. The meaning was not in the sounds. It was in the pitch. Gael leaned toward the organism and hummed a low, steady tone under the word. The creature's fins rose and held. She hummed higher, and they dropped. She marked both results in her notebook, pressing the ink hard into the page. The alien tongue did not work like hers. Each sound carried a tone, and the tone fixed the meaning. Her voice had been drifting across those tones without her knowing. That was why one word became three. She practiced the greeting again, this time locking her pitch to the low tone. The organism's fins rose and stayed. She said it a second time, then a third. Same tone. Same rising fins. Same meaning, every time. Gael turned to the window and faced the waiting ship. She steadied her breath, held the low tone in her throat, and spoke the greeting aloud. The reply came back within seconds. The translator fed her a single clear line, and it did not shift. "We hear you," it said. "Speak your message." Gael gripped the edge of the console. For the first time, her words had carried. She could speak to them now. She could ask them to broadcast her call across the stars. Then the alien voice continued, and her relief cracked. "But you speak with a mourning tone," it said. "You have told us your people are already dead. Correct this, or we carry that word to every ship we find."
