Chapter 1

Gaia smelled the smoke before she saw the man. Wood smoke, cut trees, the sour tang of iron. Behind her, forty beasts pressed close and shivered. She had led them here to make peace with the settlers who cleared the wild. But her creatures did not know peace right now. They knew only that their forest was falling. She wore the land itself. Moss hung from her shoulders. Flowers opened along her arms. Branches rose from her head like antlers, and water flowed where her hair should be. When she stopped, the whole herd stopped. When she trembled, they trembled harder. A spotted unicorn stamped beside her. Its white coat shone, marked with soft grey. It lowered its horn toward the trees and screamed. Down the slope, a boy stood at the edge of a fresh-cut clearing. He held an axe. He had frozen. Gaia knew what would happen next. The unicorn would charge. The beasts would follow. The boy would die, and every settler after him would call her creatures monsters. Her whole plan would burn in one moment of fear. "Stop," she said. The word came out thin. The unicorn dug its hooves and pawed the ground. She could not calm them with words. They were past words. So she did the thing that frightened her. She turned her back on the boy and knelt among the beasts. She pressed her palms into the dirt. She let the fear pour out of the herd and into her own body. It hit like cold water. Her breath shook. The branches on her head rattled. She held it anyway. She took their terror and made it hers. Something stirred above. A white shape uncoiled from the canopy of a great glowing tree, its trunk laced with light. The dragon had followed her for years. It moved like slow water, long and pale, with the sad eyes of an old hound. It drifted down and laid its head against her shoulder. The dragon breathed out. Warm air washed over the herd. Gaia felt the fear leave her hands and sink into the ground. The unicorn's ears came forward. It lowered its horn. It stepped back from the boy. One by one, the beasts went still. Their eyes cleared. The forest fell quiet except for the water running through Gaia's hair. Gaia stood and faced the clearing. The boy had not run. He stared at her, axe loose in his hands. Then he shouted over his shoulder, toward the settlement. "They're real," he called. "Come see. She's real." Doors opened in the distance. Voices rose. Gaia had stopped the herd from killing. Now every settler in the valley knew a woman of moss and antlers stood at their treeline, with monsters at her back. She had bought their attention. She had no idea yet what it would cost.
