Chapter 1

Galen Lorne poled his barge through the fog every night. He carried the dead across the water to the far shore. His toll was always the same: a name. Speak your name, and he would take you. But tonight the soul on his deck could not pay. She stood at the barge's rail, thin and gray, wringing her hands. Galen already knew her name. He always knew every name. That was his curse and his craft. Yet the crossing did not work that way. The soul had to speak it. The dead had to claim themselves before the water would carry them. "I don't know it," she whispered. "I've tried. It's gone." Galen said nothing. He never spoke first. But she had spoken, so he answered. "Then you cannot board. Not truly. The fog will hold you here." She wept without tears. Galen watched the fog thicken around the barge's carved rails and skull-marked hull. The fog took names. It fed on them. This soul had drifted too long, and the fog had eaten hers. He could name her himself. He wanted to. But a name given was not a name owned. She would slip off his deck before the far shore and dissolve into the water. He had lost souls that way before. He would not do it again. So Galen looked to the fog itself. A single wisp drifted near the water, small and glowing, its light shifting blue to green. The fog stored what it stole. Somewhere in that soft glow floated the woman's stolen name. Galen leaned out over the black water and cupped his hands beneath the wisp. He did not grab. He held them open and waited. The wisp settled into his palms. Its light pulsed against his gray skin. Galen felt it press words into his hands, faint as breath. He turned toward the woman. "It is here," he said. "Not mine to give. Reach in." She hesitated. Then she plunged her thin hands into the glow beside his. The wisp flared. She gasped. Her fingers closed on something only she could feel. "Elin," she said. Her voice cracked on it. "My name is Elin." The fog around the barge peeled back. The rails held firm beneath her now. She stood solid on the deck, gray no longer, and the water stopped pulling at her feet. But the wisp did not fade. It hung between them, brighter, and its light now showed shapes moving deep inside. Dozens of them. Faces. Voices. Other names the fog had swallowed and never returned. Galen stared into the glow. Every stolen name pressed toward the opening his hands had made. The fog had given up one soul. Now it wanted him to answer for all of them, and the wisp would not let his hands go.
