Chapter 4

The wolf did not spring. It circled the hollow, huge and dark, its breath fogging near the reeds. Gandalf held his staff crossways in both hands. Sable pressed her cloak tight over the glow on her arm. The growl faded to a low rumble. Then the beast lay down in the willows, watching, still as a stone. Gandalf understood. It would wait until the cold and the dark broke them. He also understood something worse. When light came, he still had no idea which way the shrine lay. He waited until gray crept through the reeds. The wolf's eyes had closed. Gandalf crawled to the edge of the hollow and looked out. Flat reedland stretched in every direction. No rise, no road, no sun to mark east. He had led them into a place he could not read. "I don't know the way," he whispered. "North, south. It all looks the same." He gripped the staff until his knuckles ached. A wrong step now would strand them deeper, with the wolf trailing the light. "Then don't guess." Sable's voice was quiet behind him. She had drawn out two sheets. One was her own working map, its middle blank. The other was the stolen archive map, its coastlines inked in careful hands. She laid them side by side on the dry earth. "The hidden map marks a real place. I decoded it in the tower." Her ink-stained finger tapped a symbol near an inlet. "This shape. It matches a bend of water I drew two days back." Gandalf leaned close. He saw it then. The channel they had followed curved the same way on both sheets. "You've been fitting your map to theirs," he said. "The whole time." "Every bend." She traced a line from the marked bend outward. "The shrine lies where these two meet. From here, we follow the channel against its flow. It bends twice, then rises to dry ground." She looked up. "That way." She pointed past the willows, away from the sleeping wolf. Gandalf studied her steady eyes behind the round spectacles. He had trusted his own maps for forty years. Out here they were worthless. Hers were not. "Then we move now," he said, "while it sleeps." They slipped from the hollow low and slow. The wolf's ear twitched but its eyes stayed shut. Sable led, counting paces, the archive map rolled tight against her chest. Gandalf followed the direction her finger had given. The channel bent left, just as her map promised. Then left again. His chest loosened. She had found the way where he could not. By midmorning the ground firmed under their boots. The reeds thinned. Ahead the land rose, dry and brown, exactly as the two maps agreed. They were not lost. But behind them, far off in the reeds, a long howl went up. The wolf had woken and found the hollow empty. It had their trail, and now it knew where they were going.
