Chapter 7

The map went dark past the second shelter. Gandalf stared at the blank stretch until his eyes ached. Two nights on, the marked stone ran out. After that, open ground and no wall to hide the glow when dawn came. He knew what that meant. Sable's mark would blaze. The wolf would find them. Dead in the reeds by sunrise. "There has to be more," he muttered. "Nobody draws half a road." Sable held the page to the window slit. She rubbed the faded ink with an ink-stained thumb. "The hidden lines just stop. Whoever copied this never finished it." She pulled a second map from her satchel, one of her own, half-drawn coastlines and empty corners. She laid it beside the stolen one. "But I've seen work like this before. This ink is Therisia's hand." Gandalf did not know the name. "Who?" "A woman who cheated me once." Sable's jaw tightened. "I fixed her contract for her. She still owes me two days of map work. I never called it in." She traced the broken edge of the hidden layer. "She drew this route. She knows where it ends." "You'd trade with someone who cheated you?" "I don't have to trade. She owes me." Sable's voice stayed soft, but her hand pressed flat on the page. "Two days. She always reads the fine print. So will I." Gandalf watched her. She had guided them true this far, stone to stone. He turned his staff in his hands. The far shrine waited at the end of these lines, the place where a wanderer might finally stop walking. He would not reach it blind. "How do we call an old debt from the middle of a swamp?" Sable took out her pen. "She bound her own reflection into a contract. If a debt is written and sealed, I can write against it." She began to draw. Not a picture. Words, small and fast, filling the blank stretch of the stolen map. "I name the debt. Two days of map work, owed and unpaid. I claim it now, as the route past the second shelter." The ink she laid down glowed faint, then steadied. Beneath her fresh words, new lines crept across the dead space. A third shelter. A fourth. A channel bending north. The hidden road stretched on toward the shrine. Gandalf leaned close, breath caught. "It's showing." "The debt paid itself." Sable did not smile. "She'll know I did this. She'll come to collect what's left, or to stop me." She folded the map slow. "But now we have the road." Outside, the wolf's cry rose again across the reeds, closer than before. The mark on Sable's wrist pulsed brighter, pulling north. Gandalf gripped his staff. The path forward was clear at last. But he had traded one blind night for a creditor who never forgot fine print, and she was already looking for them.
