Chapter 7

Gemini Venus watched the sealed log blink on the console. The mask was dead. The signal was dead. But the winged shape from the feed had not left. A perimeter camera caught it circling the outer wall of the lab, wings spread wide, feathers marked with pale open eyes. Every eye tracked the door. Gemini Venus counted three passes in one minute. If they left through the main gate now, the thing would follow them home to the inner lab and everything hidden there. They split. One of them stayed at the console to monitor the creature. The other walked to the roof access and looked up. The winged figure hovered above the metal skull of the building. It wore a hood. Its face was calm. It did not dive. It did not speak. It only watched, the way a witness watches a trial. Gemini Venus tried the obvious plan first. They cut every external antenna and dropped the facility to dark power. The circling did not stop. The watcher was not tracking a signal. It was tracking them. They pulled up the coordinate string the receiver had burned into the log before shutdown. The coordinates were not a place. They were a frequency, keyed to their own neural pattern. The watcher had their scent. In the storage bay stood a crystal pillar they had never finished assembling. Clear quartz banded with blue agate, etched with the twin sigil. They had built it years ago as a private anchor, a way to speak between their two selves when the gap grew too wide. They had never dared power it. Tonight they carried it to the center of the lab and set it upright. Both of them placed a hand on it at once. The pillar warmed. A silver blob of liquid metal seeped from the floor seam near the east wall, pooled, and lifted into a rough shape. Cancer Mercury's courier relay, quiet for months, had answered the pillar's pull. It offered a clean channel through the water lines under the district. Through that channel, a pale figure took form beside the pillar, translucent, veiled, spun from cold light. She did not speak in words. She pressed one hand to the quartz and opened the gap between the two Geminis wider than either had ever allowed. What stood in the widened gap was not the failed merge creature. It was a third self they had never met. Calm. Whole. The singularity they had been trying to build a device to reach. It gave a name in their own voice. Gemini Angel. The watcher above the roof folded its wings and settled on the antenna mast. Not a hunter. A guardian, waiting for this exact contact to occur. Gemini Venus stepped back from the pillar. The perimeter feed showed the winged figure lift once and glide away over the ridge. The path home was clear. They had not solved the merge. They had, for the first time, been seen by what the merge was meant to become.
