Chapter 1

Genesis spread her latest map across the flat stone beside the fire, checking the ink for smudges. The northern ridge was done — three weeks of work that proved the cult's curse was just wind and loose rock. She'd sell it by week's end if the weather held. Movement caught her eye at the tree line, and she looked up to see a figure stumbling toward her camp. The man collapsed against the ice sculpture she'd found half-buried near the creek — a frozen phoenix with wings spread wide, glittering in the firelight. He clutched something against his chest with both hands. Genesis grabbed her knife and moved closer. Blood soaked through his shirt from a wound she couldn't see. His breathing came in short gasps. When he saw her watching, he thrust a torn piece of parchment toward her. Half a map. The other edge was jagged where someone had ripped it apart. She took it and studied the markings. Crystal caves to the east. Territory marked with skull symbols in three different hands. The man's eyes fixed on her face. "They said you draw the truth," he whispered. Then his hand dropped and he went still. Genesis knelt beside him and checked for a pulse. Nothing. She turned back to the fragment in her hand. The symbols matched no style she recognized, but the landmarks were real — she'd seen the twin peaks drawn at the southern edge. Someone had marked this place deadly three times over. Someone else had torn the map in half and died trying to deliver it. She looked at the incomplete lines, the missing territory, the warnings without context. This wasn't a map she could sell. This was a map she'd have to finish herself. She carried the fragment inside the small wooden cabin that served as her workspace when she stayed in one place long enough. Her drafting table sat near the window where morning light would hit it. She pinned the torn map beside her collection of territorial surveys and lit three candles. The crystal formations matched a region two days east, past the canyon the cult called the Mouth of Judgment. She'd mapped the approaches but never gone deeper. Now someone had died to bring her proof that deeper existed. Genesis pulled out fresh parchment and began copying the fragment, adding her own notes in the margins. First, she'd verify the entry points. Then she'd find whoever held the other half.
