Chapter 1

Gerald Kindly buried the last of the hunter's arrows before dawn, so his friends wouldn't see them. The arrows had been meant for the goat. The goat stood behind him now, ribs showing through gray fur, one yellow eye fixed on the tree line. It had followed Gerald home three nights ago and hadn't left. Gerald patted its bony shoulder. "We need somewhere they can't reach you," he said. "All of you." His shack sat at the edge of the marsh, two candles burning in the windows because the dark made the others nervous. Inside, a small black rabbit with red eyes watched from the table. Under the porch, something heavier shifted. Gerald had six friends now, if he counted the goat. Six quiet, patchwork souls the village would burn on sight. The shack fit one man. It did not fit a town. Gerald wanted a town. That was the whole shape of it. A place where a dead baker could sell bread to a living farmer, and nobody reached for a torch. He needed land first. Land nobody wanted, far enough from the village that torches wouldn't travel, close enough that trade could. He walked out at first light with a folded map and the rabbit in his coat pocket. The goat came too. Gerald had one lead: a strip of coast the village elders called the Sour Shore. Nothing grew there but twisted palms with fronds like knives. No farmer would touch it. No hunter bothered to patrol it. Gerald had been saving three coins and a silver spoon for a year. The land agent met him at a stump outside town. He was a thin man who did not like standing near the goat. Gerald put the coins and the spoon on the stump. "The Sour Shore," he said. "All of it." The agent laughed. "You can have it for the spoon alone. Nothing lives out there." "Something will," Gerald said. He signed the paper with a shaking hand. The agent stamped it, pocketed the spoon, and walked away fast. Gerald stood on his new shore by afternoon. Salt wind moved through the black palms. The rabbit hopped down and sniffed the sand. The goat lowered its head and tore up a mouthful of brown grass. Gerald unfolded the deed and read his own name three times to be sure. Then he saw the smoke. It rose from the far end of the shore, thin and steady. A cook fire. Someone was already living on his empty land. Gerald folded the deed carefully and put it inside his coat. The rabbit climbed back into his pocket. The goat lifted its head and stared down the beach with him. "Alright," Gerald said. "We go meet the neighbors." He started walking toward the smoke.
