Chapter 2

The bell still hummed in the hills as Gigglewick yanked Briar to her feet. The elders would come fast. No roof in Toadhollow was safe from their watching, but Gigglewick had prepared one place they could not see. She tossed the bright feather bundle high into the garden hedge. It caught the wind and spun, loud as a shout of color. "Their eyes will follow that," Gigglewick whispered. Briar nodded once. She did not waste words. Gigglewick coiled the glowing ropes back to her chest and pulled Briar past the herb rows, past the well, to a low mound choked in ivy. She brushed the leaves aside. A small wooden door sat hidden in the stone, round and waiting. "Inside," Gigglewick said. Briar bent and slipped through. Gigglewick followed and shut the door. The air changed. Crystal-leafed trees lined the walls, humming a soft melody that wrapped around sound and softened its edges. Any laugh born down here would never reach the bell. Above them, footsteps gathered in the garden. Voices argued over the spinning feathers. Briar sat on the packed earth, wrists still pink from the ropes. "You hid this," she said. "For me." Gigglewick did not answer. She listened to the elders move away. They were safe, for now. But Briar's tickle-spirit was still barely a flicker, and one real laugh had already cost them the village. Gigglewick looked at the girl in the gentle, humming dark and knew the next laugh would have to happen here, underground, where joy had been forced to hide.
