Chapter 3

Glacielle carried the green-threaded letter in her pocket for two days without sending it. She had no courier she trusted. The surface mail passed through hands that answered to tide law. A sealed tube dropped at the wrong reef marker could travel to the enforcer instead of the scholar, and one wrong reader would end the canyon before the first wall stood. She worked the joints while she thought. Freeze, seal, breathe, move. By the third joint she had a name in her head. Her grandmother's old teacher. An ice wizard who lived alone in a frostwood cabin above the tideline, too far inland for patrols and too stubborn to answer any badge. He had taught her grandmother the first freeze-joint. He owed no one anything. She surfaced at dusk and climbed the shore path. The cabin sat where she remembered. Smoke came from the chimney even in summer. She knocked. The door opened on a small old dwarf with a white beard and a staff hooked like a sickle, its blade a curve of clear ice. He looked at her ocean blue hair, then at the frost still clinging to her sleeve. "Frostweave's granddaughter," he said. Not a question. "Aflred." She kept her hands where he could see them. "I need a letter carried. Once. To a scholar who studies stone. Not through any post that touches the surface routes." He leaned on the sickle staff. "And if the letter finds the wrong desk?" "Then I lose everything I've built and everything I sold to build it." His eyes moved over her ice dress. He knew what that fabric cost to hold. He knew what her grandmother's tools had been worth. "Show me the letter," he said. She handed it over. He did not open it. He turned it in his fingers, felt the green thread, and tapped the staff's blade against the doorframe. A thin skin of frost crept over the paper and sealed the fold shut. The frost was pale blue and would not melt in any hand but his. "No one but the named reader breaks that," he said. "Try, and the paper turns to slush. I'll walk it myself. Three days each way." "What do you want for it?" "Your grandmother taught me to skate. Call it even." He tucked the letter inside his robe. "But girl. When the scholar writes back, she'll want to see the place. You know that." "I know." "Then have an answer ready before I return." He shut the door. Glacielle walked back down to the water in the last light. The letter was gone from her pocket and safe in a way no surface courier could match. The enforcer would never see it. That danger was closed. A new one opened in its place. In six days a stranger would ask to walk through the dead coral door, and Glacielle still had no rule for who was allowed inside.
