Chapter 7

Coralina was gone an hour when Glacielle climbed to the canyon rim and lay flat on the coral shelf. She kept her ice dress dulled with a smear of silt. She looked up through the drift-veil at the ridge above the tide line. The penguin was there again. Small black shape against gray stone. The spyglass caught the light once, twice, and swept the dead water in a slow arc. He was mapping it. If he traced the veil's edge to the canyon mouth, patrols would follow within the day, and every joint she had frozen would be evidence at her trial. She needed him off the ridge before the veil weakened. She could not fight him. She could not outrun a report already written. She could only give his spyglass something worse to look at. She went inland at dusk and found the man she had once refused to ask. Lysander Frost stood on the frozen path of his own house, the one built like a small pale castle above the shore, sea glass set into every wall. He was the friend of the woman whose story had started all of this. He had loved her from a polite distance for three years, and he had worn blue every day since she noticed him once. He had also, in a bad hour, laughed at the wrong joke about her merfolk, and she had stopped looking at him after that. "I need a scandal," Glacielle said. "On the ridge. Tomorrow at noon." He did not ask why. "Size." "Large enough to pull a tide-law enforcer off a spyglass for two hours. Small enough that no one is hurt." "A public one clears a ridge in twenty minutes," he said. "I have a shipment of blue silk arriving at the upshore dock at eleven. I can miss the delivery. Three companies will send men to find me. I will be found on the ridge, drunk, shouting the name I am not allowed to shout." He said it flat, the way he said prices. Glacielle understood the cost. One public hour would end the quiet plan he had kept for three years. "You would do that," she said. "She is why you are building it." He looked past her at the dark water. "Tell her, someday, that I helped." At noon the next day Glacielle watched from the shelf. The penguin's spyglass swung toward the ridge and stayed there. Shouting carried down. Boots ran up the path. The ridge emptied of one enforcer, then the men who came for him, then the crowd that came for the story. The spyglass went into a coat pocket and did not come out again. By dusk the ridge was bare. The canyon mouth was still a secret. Glacielle climbed down to the ledge where the frost-wolf waited and pressed her palm flat to the coral. She owed three families a reef. She owed one man a message she was not ready to carry.
