Chapter 1
Glimmer Havocbringer loved watching history burn, but only if he never touched it. That was his rule. He wanted the Library of Alexandria most of all. Now he stood outside its doors, one day before the fire, and he could not tell if he was already ruining everything.
The problem was simple. His sparks. They fell off him without warning. One stray glint on a scroll, one bright flick of chaos, and the whole flame might come early. Reality would bend. He had sworn never to bend it. But he could not see which moment was safe to enter and which would break under his touch.
Liora arrived in a burst of every color. Her hair held them all. She looked at the tall shelves and the worried scribes and did not blink. "You're leaking," she said. She pointed at a spark sliding off his shoulder.
"I know," Glimmer said. "That's the trouble. I can't tell what's safe."
Aurora stepped through next, gold from head to foot. Glitter fell where she walked. She looked at the endless scrolls, then at Glimmer's twitching hands. "Don't watch it burn," she said. "Save it first."
"That breaks my rule," Glimmer said. "I don't touch. I don't change."
"You won't change anything," Aurora said. "The fire still comes. The scrolls still burn. But we keep the words. In here." She tapped her temple. "Memory isn't touching. Memory is watching harder."
Glimmer stared at her. She was right. Reading was not rewriting. He could carry the knowledge out without moving a single shelf. The fire would happen exactly as it always had. Nothing in this moment would break.
He found he could breathe. "Then we memorize all of it," he said. "Before dawn."
They split the hall three ways. Liora took the far shelves, reading fast, her lips moving. Aurora took the center, her gold light spilling over old ink. Glimmer took the rest. He read scroll after scroll and held each one whole in his mind. He did not fold a corner. He did not leave a mark. For once his sparks stayed close, because he had somewhere to put them.
Near dawn a scribe passed and saw nothing wrong. The three of them looked like scholars. That felt like proof. Glimmer had spent a whole night inside history, and history had not shifted an inch.
When the last scroll was done, they stepped outside. The sky was going pale. Tomorrow the flames would take the building, and Glimmer would finally watch. But the words were safe now, tucked inside three chaos gods who would never forget them.
"We did it," Glimmer said. "We touched nothing."
Aurora's face stayed flat. "Not nothing," she said. "Three of us carry it now. That's power. Someone will want it."
Glimmer's smile faded. He had saved every word without changing the past. But he had made himself the only living copy. And that, he realized, was a thing worth stealing.
